To present filmmakers with new and fascinating settings beneath the surface of Munich, the Film Commission Bayern embarked on a special discovery tour together with around 25 guests: “Munich Underground.”

Among the participants were location managers, production designers, location scouts, producers, and production executives – all in search of unique places that can bring stories to life. Representatives of the respective location providers offered first-hand insights into their sites and the specific challenges they present.

The underground journey began at the Old North Cemetery, where impressive, brick-lined sections of Munich’s historic sewage system lie hidden beneath the grounds. The soft dripping of water, the muffled footsteps on damp floors, and the dimmed light lent the tour an almost cinematic suspense. The next stop took the group beneath Akademiestraße, revealing further glimpses into the city’s intricate network of tunnels.

A particular highlight was a rare visit to a non-public section of the subway system beneath Munich East Station (Ostbahnhof). From there, participants could not only observe trains entering and leaving the station but also discover an impressive light installation illuminating the underground space.

To round off the day, the group gathered at the traditional Augustiner Keller, where, over Bavarian snacks and drinks, there was time for conversation, networking, and creative exchange. A guided look into the venue’s historic beer cellar perfectly concluded this expedition into Munich’s hidden depths.

Thus, the day became an inspiring journey beneath the surface – and perhaps the beginning of new and extraordinary filming locations to come.
