German Federal Film Fund – German Spend

In addition to regional film funding in Bavaria, there are also numerous other regional and national funding institutions in Germany. Of particular interest for feature film production is the new German Federal Film Fund, which came into effect on 1 January 2007 and for which the German government has made available 60 million Euros annually for the duration of the legislative period.

This model projects reimbursement of between 16 and 20 percent of the production costs spent and accepted in Germany. Films with a minimum production budget of 1 million Euros can be reimbursed, as well as documentaries (200.000 Euros) and animation films (3 million Euros) that are intended for the cinema. One condition for receiving the production costs reimbursement is that at least 25 percent of the production budget be spent in Germany (German Spend) and that the film fulfills a so-called cultural quality test.

Producers who are based in Germany or who have an office in Germany may apply. Producers based outside of Germany may access the regional film funding as well as the German Federal Film Fund by way of a German co-producer.
